Trail app alternative: checklists, temperatures, allergens and the rota in one place
Trail is a well-regarded hospitality task and compliance app from The Access Group, priced per site from £38 a month on monthly billing with 12-month terms and a 14-day trial (as of October 2026). ShiftComplete covers checklists, temperature logs, allergens and incidents too, and also builds your staff rota, for £1.49 per staff member a month with 60 days free.
On this page
Trail is one of the best-known names in digital checklists for UK hospitality. It replaced a lot of clipboards in a lot of kitchens, and it's good at what it does: getting the right task in front of the right person at the right time, with evidence.
People look for a Trail alternative for a few reasons. Some want something priced for a single site with a small team. Some find themselves paying for a checklist app and a separate rota app and wonder why their staff need two logins. This page compares Trail and ShiftComplete on the things kitchens actually log: checklists, temperatures and allergens. Trail details are as of October 2026, checked on Trail's own website and linked in the sources.
What Trail does well
Trail describes itself as a work-management app for hospitality, and is part of The Access Group. As of October 2026, its website shows:
- Checklists and tasks that prompt staff at the right time, with a template library and ad hoc tasks, snooze, tags and filters.
- Record logs for repetitive data like temperatures, with mandatory photos available as evidence.
- Flagging issues so problems are highlighted, commented on and resolved; corrective actions on the Standard plan and above.
- Scores, reporting and dashboards, plus daily and weekly digests.
- A large food-safety template library, including fridge and freezer temperature logs, hot food and reheating logs, delivery checks, probe calibration, pest activity, dishwasher checks, legionella checks, an Allergen Control Checklist and an Allergic Reaction Report.
- Integrations, including labl.it sensors for fridge and freezer temperatures, and named partners such as iAuditor, HGEM and Epos Now.
- Multi-site, enterprise and franchise support.
For a multi-site operator that wants detailed audits, scoring across sites and sensor-fed temperatures, Trail is a strong option.
Where ShiftComplete is different
ShiftComplete covers the daily food-safety records too, but it also does the job most venues still do on a spreadsheet: the staff rota.
Checklists
Opening, closing, cleaning and due-diligence checks that differ by weekday, so Monday's deep-clean list isn't on Tuesday. Add one-off priority tasks when something comes up. Every tick is named and timestamped, photo evidence can be optional or required, and a 2am close still counts as "today", which matters in a late bar.
Temperatures
Every fridge, freezer, hot-hold and ambient point gets its own min and max. Staff log a reading on their phone or the tablet behind the bar in seconds. Out-of-range readings are flagged on the dashboard straight away, and there's a 7-day rolling view for when the EHO asks. ShiftComplete doesn't connect to wireless sensors; readings are entered by your team.
Allergens
Every menu item is mapped to the 14 UK allergens and grouped by course. Front-of-house can search a dish from the floor when a guest asks, and only managers can edit. That's a working allergen matrix, not a checklist about allergens.
Incidents, maintenance and risk assessments
Log an incident or a broken fryer in seconds with a photo, severity and status, add resolution notes and see what's still open on the dashboard. Create, keep and print risk assessments in the app.
And the rota
Staff set their availability on their phones. You add events and weight the people you want on, and ShiftComplete builds a fair draft rota in seconds. Split shifts (up to four blocks per person per day), custom areas like Bar, Kitchen and Floor, day notes, holidays, and labour cost while you build. Publish it to everyone's phone. The same people who log the fridge temps see their shifts in the same app.

What it costs a single venue
Trail prices per site. As of October 2026 its plans are £38, £75 or £82.50 per site per month on monthly billing (£32, £65 or £71.50 billed yearly), and its pricing page says all plans run on 12-month terms.
ShiftComplete prices per staff member: £1.49 a month, every feature, no per-site fee, no contract. A café with 10 staff pays £14.90 a month. A pub with 20 staff pays £29.80, and that includes the rota. If you currently pay for a checklist app and a rota app, compare against both bills together.
What to check before switching checklist apps
Your records are evidence, so plan the move rather than flipping overnight:
- Export your history first. Keep the last few months of temperature and cleaning records from your current app, in case an inspector or your insurer asks.
- Match every check. List each fridge, freezer, hot-hold unit and probe check you do now, and make sure each has a home in the new app with the right limits.
- Decide who logs what. Name the person or role responsible for each check, especially at opening and close.
- Test the late shift. Make sure a check done after midnight lands on the right trading day.
- Watch for contract terms. Trail's pricing page says its plans run on 12-month terms, so time your switch to your renewal date.
Who should choose Trail
Trail is likely the better fit if:
- You want wireless sensors feeding fridge and freezer temperatures automatically.
- You run many sites and need detailed audits, scoring and brand-standard reporting across them.
- You use tools like iAuditor or HGEM and want them connected.
- Your rota is already handled well somewhere else and you're happy keeping two systems.
Who ShiftComplete suits better
ShiftComplete is likely the better fit if:
- You want one app for the team: rota, temps, allergens, checklists and incidents.
- You need an allergen matrix by dish that front-of-house can search.
- You're a single site or small group and want a monthly price with no contract.
- You want two months to try it with real services before paying.
"The rota stopped being a Sunday-night argument the week we switched over. The chef stopped being the only person who knows what's in the kitchen. And the EHO turn up to a screen, not a box file." Graeme Kirkham, Owner, The Lounge Oswestry & Knock & Snitch

Moving your checks across
Start with what you log every day. List your fridges, freezers and hot-hold units with their ranges, recreate your opening and closing checks by weekday, and add your menu with allergens. Run a week alongside your current app so nothing is missed, then switch. ShiftComplete is free for 60 days, no card, and there's a free 15-minute set-up call if you want a hand.

Frequently asked questions
How much does Trail cost?
As of October 2026, Trail's pricing page lists per-site prices: Team at £38 a month (£32 billed yearly), Standard at £75 (£65 yearly), a higher tier at £82.50 (£71.50 yearly), and Enterprise on custom pricing. It says all plans run on 12-month terms, and offers a 14-day free trial with no credit card.
Does Trail do staff rotas?
We didn't find staff rotas on Trail's features or use-case pages as of October 2026. Its scheduling is about putting tasks at the right time of day. Trail is part of The Access Group, which sells other hospitality software, but within Trail itself the focus is tasks, logs and audits. ShiftComplete does rotas and food-safety records in one app.
Can Trail log temperatures automatically?
Trail's integrations page names labl.it, whose in-situ sensors log fridge and freezer temperatures, as of October 2026. ShiftComplete doesn't connect to sensors: staff log readings on a phone or tablet in seconds against each unit's own range, and out-of-range readings are flagged. If wireless sensors are essential to you, check Trail or a sensor-led provider.
Which is better for allergens, Trail or ShiftComplete?
They approach it differently. Trail lists an Allergen Control Checklist and an Allergic Reaction Report among its food-safety templates. ShiftComplete maps every menu item to the 14 UK allergens, grouped by course, so front-of-house can search a dish on the floor and answer a guest, with only managers able to edit it.
