Tips and tronc split calculator

Updated 26 October 2026 · 2 min read · By the ShiftComplete team

The short answer

Split a tip pot by hours worked: divide the pot by the total hours everyone worked to get a rate per hour, then multiply by each person's hours. Optional points let you weight roles, as long as your written tipping policy says so.

Add your team, the hours each person worked and the size of the tip pot. Nothing is sent or saved.

Enter the tip pot.

How the split works

  • By hours: pot ÷ total hours = a rate per hour, then each person gets their hours × that rate. £480 shared across 114 hours is £4.21 an hour.
  • By hours and points: each person's hours are multiplied by their points (for example 1.2 for a supervisor) before sharing. Only use points if your written tipping policy sets them out and the team knows.

The calculator shares the pot to the penny, so the shares always add up to exactly what went in.

Keep it fair and on record

The rules on tips changed in October 2024: all qualifying tips must go to workers, the split must be fair, and you need a written policy staff can see. Read our guide to tips and tronc rules before you choose a method.

Hours are the hard part. ShiftComplete records the hours on your rota and, if you switch on clocking in, the hours people actually worked, and you can download them as a spreadsheet each week to work out the split.

Frequently asked questions

Is splitting tips by hours worked fair?

It's the most common approach because it's simple and easy to explain: someone who worked twice as long gets twice the share. Some businesses weight roles with points. Since October 2024, employers in Great Britain must pass all qualifying tips to workers, allocate them fairly and have a written tipping policy; the statutory Code of Practice explains what fair looks like.

Can the business keep part of the tips?

No. Under the Employment (Allocation of Tips) Act 2023, employers must pass on all qualifying tips, gratuities and service charges to workers without deductions, other than those required by law such as tax. See our guide to tips and tronc rules for the detail.

Do tips count towards the minimum wage?

No. Tips, gratuities and service charges can't be used to make up the National Minimum or Living Wage.
