Updated 26 October 2026 · 7 min read · By the ShiftComplete team

The short answer

Trail, part of The Access Group, is a task and checklist app with a large food-safety template library, priced per site from £38 a month (£32 billed yearly) on 12-month terms as of October 2026. Trail and Navitas are two of the best-known food-safety apps in UK hospitality, and they come at the problem from different directions. Trail is a task and checklist app: it tells the team what to do and when, and keeps the record. Navitas is built around continuous temperature monitoring: wireless sensors in every fridge, a connected probe, and alerts when something drifts, with checks, audits and training around it.

If you're replacing paper Safer Food, Better Business diaries or a box file of temperature sheets, this page lays out what each one does well, what it costs and who it suits. Every fact was checked on Trail's and Navitas's own websites as of October 2026 and is linked in the sources. ShiftComplete publishes this page; we've tried to be fair to both.

The short answer

  • Choose Trail if your priority is getting the right checks done at the right time across one or many sites, with a big library of ready-made food-safety templates, published prices and a free trial.
  • Choose Navitas if you run a larger estate and want fridges and freezers monitored around the clock by sensors, probe readings recorded against menu items, plus audits, incident reporting and staff training in one platform.
  • Look at a third option if you're an independent venue that wants temperature logs, allergens and checklists in the same app as the staff rota.

Who Trail suits

What Trail does well. Trail makes routines happen. Tasks are set to run daily, on certain days or every few months at a set time, photos can be made mandatory, and each site gets a daily performance score by email. Its food-safety library includes fridge and freezer temperature log sheets, hot food and cooked and reheated food logs, opening and closing checks, an Allergen Control Checklist, an Allergic Reaction Report, a Food Poisoning Report, pest activity, delivery checks, dishwasher checks, legionella checks and weekly probe calibration. Dashboards and digests show head office what's done across sites. It connects to labl.it sensors, Epos Now, Tenzo, iAuditor, HGEM and Zapier. Trail says teams have completed over 300 million tasks in more than 40 countries.

Best for: single sites up to large estates that want structured, checklist-led routines with photo evidence and clear published pricing. The Team plan covers 1-3 sites.

Watch for: per-site pricing on 12-month terms, so time any switch to your renewal date. Sensors come through a partner rather than Trail's own hardware.

Who Navitas suits

What Navitas does well. Navitas takes temperature checks out of human hands. Its wireless Pods store and timestamp fridge, freezer and display-line temperatures 24/7, gateways keep transmitting through local outages, and alerts escalate by unit type, time of day and role before a unit fails. The SmartProbe records food temperatures straight into the app against specific menu items. Around that sit HACCP-matched digital checklists, integrated kitchen labelling for shelf-life rules, automated corrective actions, offline working, a multi-site compliance dashboard, internal audits, risk assessments, incident reporting with root-cause investigation, and Navitas Academy courses in food safety, health and safety and fire. Navitas says it's trusted across more than 15,000 hospitality locations, and it serves hotels, contract caterers, quick service, care homes, venues and stadia.

Best for: multi-site operators and enterprises with a compliance or operations team that want continuous monitoring, consistent standards across sites and one platform for checks, audits, incidents and training.

Watch for: no published prices and no free trial found; you'll need a demo, and hardware means an installation step (Navitas says it doesn't need a site IT project).

A third option for UK hospitality: ShiftComplete

Trail and Navitas are food-safety and operations specialists. Neither runs your staff rota, so most venues using them pay for a second app for that. ShiftComplete is the everyday operations and rota app for UK pubs, restaurants, cafés, bars and hotels, and it helps you keep the records an EHO asks to see in the same place as the rota.

  • Temperature logs: every fridge, freezer, hot-hold and ambient point with its own min/max range. Staff log readings on a phone or the tablet behind the bar in seconds, out-of-range readings are flagged on the dashboard, photos are optional, and every entry is named and timestamped with a 7-day rolling view for EHO visits.
  • Allergens: every dish mapped to the 14 UK allergens, grouped by course and searchable by front-of-house from the floor.
  • Checklists: opening, closing, cleaning and due-diligence checks that differ by weekday, with optional or required photos. A 2am close still counts as "today".
  • Incidents, maintenance and risk assessments, with a weekly report and a full audit log with CSV export.
  • Rotas and clock-in: staff set availability on their phones, ShiftComplete builds a draft rota in seconds, and clocking in and out (a setting you switch on) gives you hours to download for payroll.
  • Price: £1.49 per staff member per month, every feature included, no per-site fee, no contract. Free for 60 days, no card.

What it doesn't do: no wireless sensors or probe connection, no label printing, no audit scoring and no training courses. If continuous sensor monitoring is essential, Navitas or Trail with labl.it will suit you better.

"The rota stopped being a Sunday-night argument the week we switched over. The chef stopped being the only person who knows what's in the kitchen. And the EHO turn up to a screen, not a box file."

What it costs for one venue

Trail list prices as of October 2026, before any VAT. Navitas doesn't publish prices, so we can't include it here.

The differences that matter in a kitchen

Manual logs or sensors

This is the biggest choice. Sensors (Navitas's Pods, or labl.it with Trail) log fridges continuously and catch a failing unit overnight. Manual logs on a phone are cheaper and simpler, but rely on staff doing them. Many single-site kitchens are well served by quick manual logging with flagged breaches; large estates often justify sensors. Our guide to digital temperature logs covers the trade-off.

Checklists and evidence

Both do photo-backed digital checks. Trail's strength is its template library and time-of-day task scheduling; Navitas ties checks to HACCP rules and automated corrective actions.

Beyond food safety

Navitas adds audits, risk assessments, incident investigation and training. Trail adds custom audits, documents on higher tiers and many integrations. Neither does staff rotas.

How to choose

Frequently asked questions

How much do Trail and Navitas cost?

As of October 2026, Trail publishes per-site prices: Team £38 a month (£32 billed yearly), Standard £75 (£65 yearly), a higher tier at £82.50 (£71.50 yearly) and custom Enterprise pricing, all on 12-month terms with unlimited users. Navitas doesn't publish prices on its website; you book a demo for a quote, which will also depend on how many sensors and sites you need.

Do Trail or Navitas have wireless fridge sensors?

Navitas makes its own: wireless Pods log fridges, freezers and ambient areas 24/7 through gateways, with a SmartProbe for food temperatures. Trail connects to sensors through an integration with labl.it, whose in-situ sensors log fridge and freezer temperatures into Trail, as of October 2026. ShiftComplete doesn't connect to sensors; staff log readings on a phone or tablet.

Is there a free trial of Trail or Navitas?

Trail offers a 14-day free trial with no credit card, as of October 2026. We didn't find a free trial on Navitas's website; its pages offer a demo instead. ShiftComplete is free for 60 days with no card, covers temperature logs, allergens and checklists, and also runs your staff rota.

Do Trail or Navitas do staff rotas?

No. We didn't find staff rotas on either company's feature pages as of October 2026. Trail schedules tasks to the right time of day, and Navitas schedules checks and routines, but neither builds staff shift rotas. Most venues using them run a separate rota app. ShiftComplete does both rotas and food-safety records in one app.

Which is better for a single independent restaurant?

Trail publishes a Team plan for 1-3 sites at £38 a month (monthly billing) with a 14-day trial, so it's easier to try. Navitas's pages are aimed at multi-site operators and enterprises and offer a demo rather than self-serve sign-up. For one site with a small team, also compare ShiftComplete at £1.49 per staff member per month, rota included.
